I have taken some time prior to writing a review on Flashpoint, to read the entire story. One of the things I have noticed with all of Geoff John’s books lately is that they have not worked very well as single issues. This can easily be related to the amount of time between the releases of the issues, or that too much is left unanswered per issue. Either way, if I had reviewed Flashpoint #5 last week when I first read it, as opposed to now, it would have received mediocre ratings. This review will be for the entire series, as opposed to the final installment.
Art
The art for the story arc was very enjoyable. There were a few areas where the characters faces were larger than previous panels, but overall things were done very well. I think that this book is a good example of how colorists do not typically get the credit they deserve for their work in comics. I have noticed that Alex Sinclair’s work really brings another dimension to the books he has worked on recently. This is apparent in Flashpoint, and in the new Justice League book. This can easily be traced back to his work for the last few years, but the end result is still enjoyable artwork for this book. (4.5 out of 5)
Writing
Reading the issues one by one, I found the story to be uninteresting. When I pick up my comics each week, I put them in a pile in the order that I plan to read them. So for instance, the weeks that the Walking Dead is released, that is usually the first book I read. Usually, “big” story arcs like this, are at least in the top five books to read. Flashpoint however, was pushed to the bottom quarter of my pile each week it was released.
Reading the issues back to back was a different experience. I found that the story kept me interested enough that I wanted to read the next book to continue the experience. The story presented did keep my attention until the end, but overall I still did not like it story. The various decisions made by the characters just did not seem to fit their personalities, and the end result brought my distaste for the DC Universe reboot to the forefront of my mind. Would I read it again?
I do not see this as a storyline that I will be interested in reading again in the future. Taking the time to go through the entire series this weekend was more than enough for me. The various decisions, characters performing actions that were contrary to their personalities were enough for me to catalogue the books, and leave them in their container for a long time. Final Thoughts
There were definitely things that I liked about this story, but the end result is not very exciting.
